About Us

Who We Are

The Chicago Metropolitan Trauma Society (CMTS) is an organization composed of providers of trauma care from each of the largest Chicago’s adult and pediatric Level 1 Trauma Centers.  The goal of  CMTS is to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge pertaining to the management of trauma, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery patients.  Our members include attending surgeons, emergency medicine physicians, surgery residents, emergency medicine residents, and trauma/critical care nurses.  Additionally, medical students and other healthcare providers with an interest in trauma care are always welcome to participate in our organization.

CMTS was initially founded in 1987 by a group of local Trauma surgeons with national stature. Among our founders were pioneers in the field of injury management who extensively published and contributed to the advancement of trauma care in America.  Over the years, our organization has grown from a handful of attending physicians to several hundred members who share the same passion for our field, and has become one of the premier educational societies in the Midwest.

What We Do

To accomplish our goal of facilitating exchange of knowledge between our member institutions we host monthly dinner meetings that are open to all members and their guests who participate in the care of Chicago’s trauma patients.  These meetings begin with a featured speaker discussing a critical care or emergency general surgery topic.  Next, one to two trauma cases from one of our local Level 1 Trauma Centers are presented.  The discussions encompass all aspects of the patient’s care, including the primary survey, diagnostic work-up, surgical decision-making, and post-operative management.  These presentations are designed to be interactive and are geared towards all audience members, regardless of specialty or level of training.

We hope that CMTS will foster collaboration, both across disciplines and between our member institutions.  By working together we have the opportunity to positively impact the way that we provide trauma care in Chicago.
